You may remember last October, we painted our kitchen and kitchen cabinets. We gave it a whole new look with some paint, tin back splash and new appliances. Here’s the before photo in case you missed it:
But what I always wonder after looking at a great update, or seeing a project completed online, is “how did that hold up over time?”. Well today I’m going to answer that question for you! It’s been 8 months since we painted our cabinets white, and we live hard in this kitchen. We cook probably 5-6 days a week, and with three kids they are always in and out of the kitchen!!
Here’s a video tour of the kitchen cabinets so you can see it in person.
Overall the cabinets have held up fantastic! I have not done any touch ups so far, and there are really only a couple small spots that need it, mostly on the silverware drawer or by the sink that gets a lot of use.
This area is still bumped by stools so you can see a few nicks on the lower cabinets. This is very easy to touch-up, all I would do is clean the cabinets and then get a little paint and touch up with my favorite Purdy brushes.
I don’t have to clean white cabinets as much as you would think. In fact I don’t think these have yet gotten a full wipe down. I just use an all purpose cleaner (Mrs. Meyers is my favorite) when needed to spot clean. Easy peasy!
This is real life here, it’s clean but I didn’t stage it (note vitamins on the counter and lunch boxes on the fridge, this is how we roll).
It’s a fresh, white kitchen that works so well for our family. I still can’t believe looking at those dark original photos. This makeover is all about paint!
The full tutorial on how I painted the cabinets, and what I used is here for you!
Have you painted your cabinets?? How are they holding up?
Until next time, stay creative!

Your kitchen is beautiful…So much lighter and brighter! My husband repainted our oak cabinets with the Rust-Oleum cabinet painting kit. He painted them about 6 years ago. They still look great and have held up with very little wear ( I try to take care of things so they last as long as possible).
You will see me comment a lot because I think you do such wonderful work and I have an appreciation for it. I love all things DIY and seeing what others do, I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned how to paint and refinish furniture, but I want to learn how to build it, as well. Seeing many talented women doing this gives me confidence that I can do it. I look forward to your next project.
Awe thank you for your sweet comments! Yes, I agree, I’ve followed some bloggers for a long time, and seeing them do it encourages me to do it too!! Thank you for being here!
Is the Behr paint still holding up well after all this time? I’m looking to paint my kitchen cabinets as well and trying to do some research on what is the best paint to use.
Yes, it sure is! I need to do some touch-ups in spots after 1.5 years of use, but overall I’m very happy with how this paint is holding up! I would use the same products all over again 😉
What is your first choice for painting Oak cabinets that have not been painted before? Is there a problem if I use a high dense foam roller?
General Finish color Snow White ?
Behr Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel water base?
You can try a high density foam roller, I just find roller leave funny marks in my paint sometimes. Be sure to have a good brush handy to smooth things out. I would go with BIN primer and then the Behr Alkyd Semi-Gloss. That’s what I would use for a pure white cabinet.
