A headboard can really finish off a bedroom.  Whether it’s something fun, unusual or just a focal point for the bed, headboards are a great DIY project because they aren’t too hard to make!  I pulled together this DIY wood headboard roundup to give you several ideas on how you can build one yourself! 

How to Make a Headboard: 8 DIY Ideas

1. DIY Pallet Headboard

This headboard is made with fence posts!  Can you believe a fence post could look so good – an inexpensive solution to add a lot of rustic charm to your bedroom! Instructions on Liz Marie’s blog right here! 

2. Shiplap Headboard

I made this one for a client who was transforming her bedroom from traditional into a more beachy vibe.  I used pre-stained wood planks and made this ship-lap headboard which was the perfect compliment to her room.  See how I built it here. 

3. DIY Sofa Headboard

Did you ever think about making a headboard for your sofa?  I didn’t either, but it’s brilliant!  And it adds another surface to decorate, almost like a mantel.  Check out how to build this gorgeous headboard here. 

4. DIY Textured Headboard

This looks like a complicated build, but it’s actually made with wood shims!  They make a plain piece of plywood look like an interesting wall sculpture! Sheri knocked this build out of the park, see how here! 

5. Hollow Core Door Headboard

This idea is brilliant!  Hollow core doors are inexpensive and BIG making them the perfect starting point for a headboard! Gina made this into a king size headboard – see how she put it all together here. 

6. DIY Closet Door Headboard

7. Old Door Headboard

Find an old door you love but aren’t sure what to do with? Add a bit of trim to it and make it a headboard!  This is truly an easy project with a really fun result!
